ME=WE

What is ME=WE?

The ME=WE Movement is a grassroots initiative designed to inspire a profound awareness of the interconnectedness of humanity in the 21st century.

Rooted in the belief that individual transformation is essential for societal change, the movement encourages participants to adopt a lifestyle that embodies the principle of "ME=WE.": Personal growth and self-awareness are not only beneficial for the individual but are also integral to the well-being and progress of the community. It is a call to action for individuals and communities to embrace interconnectedness, pursue personal transformation alongside collective service to build a more unified and compassionate future.

What we aim to accomplish

By addressing the blind spots that inhibit our ability to live harmoniously, the movement seeks to cultivate resilient, vibrant communities grounded in the principles of empathy, cooperation, and mutual support.

By integrating science, spirituality, social action, and the arts, the movement aims to foster a holistic approach to personal and societal transformation. Participants embark on a transformative pathway characterized by several stages: preparation, discovery, observation, connection, definition, practice, and evolution. This cyclical process allows individuals to deepen their understanding of themselves and their communities while actively participating in service-oriented projects that benefit society as a whole.

History and Publications

ME=WE emerged from a personal need to guide design students in exploring self-discovery and connecting their practice to a larger purpose. Rooted in the concept of the Mobius strip, this framework symbolizes the interconnectedness of the individual (ME) and community (WE). It enables the exploration of the relationships with the self, others, and the forces of energy that binds us all.

This workshop has been implemented in diverse contexts, from classrooms and community settings to organizational workshops worldwide since 2015 and in 5 different countries and has engaged over 650 individuals. Its simplicity and adaptability make it accessible to all age groups and cultural backgrounds making it an effective tool for diverse populations.

Over the years ME=WE has been disseminated through the following academic papers: “Self.Society.Service in ME=WE. In: Walther, C.C. (eds) Handbook of Quality of Life and Social Change. International Handbooks of Quality-of-Life. Springer, Cham.” (2024), "Co-Designing A Pathway Through Food Revolution For Social Change." (2021), "Co-designing a social innovation model for changemakers." (2018), "A case study of cultivating youth empowerment." Banff: Relating Systems Thinking and Design (2015). ME=WE has also been presented in various round table discussions and panel talks such as Dubai EXPO 2020, The Parliament of World Religions 2022 and multiple other design talks.

“Like fungi and plants, we are co-becoming with our ecosystems. Ecosystems that are ruptured, polluted, and confused by our culture’s deracinated idea that you can live without a root system. But if we are going to survive, we need to tie our roots to other roots. Resilience ecology tells us that landscapes with more biodiversity, more overall connectivity are better able to withstand natural disasters and climatological pressures. We are going to need to drop below human exceptionalism into the underworld of symbiotic co-creation.” - Sophie Strand.
